The Civil War in NE North Carolina

The charred Black Warrior gun carriage is back home in Elizabeth City after being conserved at the underwater archaeology facility at Kure Beach. Here it sits next to the CSS Albemarle smokestack on display in the gallery at the Museum of the Albemarle.

I don't have the report, just the map they made. Would you like for me to ask Nathan Henry if we can get a copy?

Bruce, do you have any of the archaeological report made from when UAB mapped out the wreck? That'll be more informative for a lines drawing. In the end, I also hope to do the same thing for Sea Bird as well. But that data will come from this summer's work.

That would be neat. I have the drawings made of the wreck site and the side-scan sonar view taken by Barry Cullens if they would be of use.

I'm In the ship reconstruction class at ECU right now. After I learn the basics, over the summer (so long as I have the free time between diving and research), I might be able to draw up some rough lines drawings for Black Warrior for the website.

I've found an experienced local diver with a 30 foot boat and an underwater metal detector that would like to help and Adam has some of the ECU maritime studies department students interested in the project, so I would say our prospect of getting the six target wrecks checked out is the best it has ever been.

Not to my knowledge. We are back on track to look for the Sea Bird this summer. My getting stuck with the football coaching job this fall got us off schedule, but Adam Parker is ready to join me in the search this summer. I retire in July, so there is nothing on my end to get in the way as it did last fall. 76 more work days to go!

It's good to see some activity here. BTW, has anyone tried to make any reconstruction drawings of the Black Warrior?
